The Problem
We have observed that people attending festivals need easy and quick access to resources in order to assist in cases of health and safety concerns they have while attending these events to prevent frustrations and health and safety risks.
The Solution
A festival guide that provides health and safety resources and prioritizes the well-being of users while also improving the functionality of resources needed for large events.
The Impact
Festival goers worry less, are better protected, and have a more enjoyable experience where they can participate more and Lumen Loud does all the thinking for them.
Discover & Define
User Interviews & Survey
We began by interviewing potential users, our goal was to discover the frustrations and concerns they had when attending festivals or large events. We did a total of 11 interviews; 5 of which were users (people who attend festivals), and 7 were from stakeholders. We were lucky in that we had a variety of stakeholders: event throwers, promoters, musicians, and medical volunteers; our project had the benefit of having an accessible user pool, so we really wanted to capitalize on these resources. To strengthen our user data even more, we created a survey that got 53 responses.
Key Takeaways
Users need easily accessible food and water
Users are worried about getting lost or losing a friend
Users need maps and clear landmarks
Users need more information provided prior to the event
User persona
And now, we meet Donna, our user persona, she’s referred to as the mom of the group. She is a veteran festival-goer who has all of the information about the festival memorized before she goes, and is prepared for anything. You name it, she’s got it. Donna’s main goal is to have a fun, memorable, and safe time at the festival with her friends. She needs to be able to keep track of her friends and it's a priority that she has easy access to information, water stations, bathrooms, etc. She gets frustrated when she has unclear expectations and shows up unprepared. But now, she has everything an app away!
Creating an empathy map for Donna further aided our understanding of the user's needs and pain points.
Problem Statement
We have observed that people attending festivals need easy and quick access to resources in order to assist in cases of health and safety concerns they have while attending these events which lead to frustrations and health and safety risks.
How might we?
How might we provide easy and quick access to resources to aid and assist in cases of health and safety emergencies for people attending music festivals and large events?
Solutions and Focus Features
We then began brainstorming and prioritizing which features would be most impactful and beneficial to our users.

User Flow Diagrams
Creating user flow diagrams for the mobile and smartwatch apps, proved to be difficult because we wanted to accomplish a lot, however, we reviewed what the most important features would be and prioritized those. Our original flows remain similar to our end products, but we iterated a lot throughout the process.

Competitor Analysis
We took a look into two different data sources between companies that have manufactured wristband technology and festival organizers.
When analyzing their approach to organizing safety at their festivals, we found that the band materials are expensive and battery outputs don’t last long between charging periods, so it may be more tech affordant to establish solely an application that is accessible for existing smartwatches.
We also found that there is not enough accurate data on the flow of crowd traffic between stages for the event organizers. We identified some wristband products inspirations that established a proximity radar for other personnel that had the wristband on. This provided us a unique look into our competitive advantage by having a live location tracker geared for approved friends accepted to the account.
An SOS Med Tent Locator or Retrieval for Emergency feature would also be key to implement into our design for safety awareness.
